For many Christians, the Old Testament is just a random collection of stories we learned as children (Noah’s Ark, David & Goliath, Samson & Delilah). For others, it’s an archive of outdated religious law & ritual (“thank God Jesus came to get rid of all that!”). But what if the OT is far more important to our faith than we think? What if the New Testament makes little sense without it? Can you imagine picking up a thick crime novel and starting to read it three-quarters of the way through?
This next year, from January through December, Shoreline Free Methodist will be reading through the Old Testament together. Everyone that wants to participate will receive a notebook with weekly devotional inserts to guide them through the OT. On Sundays, the services will be focused on that particular passage and many of the small groups (including the youth) will be discussing that same passage in their groups. In addition, we're setting up a blog (soon to be made public) where you can share thoughts, ask questions and chat about what we're reading with other people in our church.
We're also having a number of special events through out the year, including the "Walk Thru the OT Seminar", drama presentations, and a visit from OT Professor Dr. Frank Spina from SPU.
